2010 Squam Alps
Squam Alps Statement August 2010
For over 30 years I have been closely involved with Switzerland but I have never concentrated on the alpine landscape in my art. My Swiss influences were more pastoral and I made imaginal pictures dealing with memories of the ubiquitous cows and fields.
In July 2010 while visiting the European Graduate School, located in Saas Fee, I had the time to make sketches and study the highest Swiss Alps and glaciers surrounding the village which is situated at 1800 meters above sea level in the canton of Valais. When I returned home and started to consider how to develop my Saas Fee images into paintings, I was reluctant to depart from my years of interpreting the immediate landscape surrounding our house in the village of Annisquam in Gloucester, Massachusetts which exemplifies the granite strewn coast of Cape Ann.
As I examined my drawings of the rugged and foreboding Swiss mountains, I realized how their granite shapes were similar to the rocks left by an ancient glacier near my barn studio. I took close-up photographs of the rocks and was impressed by their alpine appearance. By narrowing perception I saw compositions and features for the first time. Moving closer to the rocks connected their shapes to the far away Alps and more universal configurations.
I made a series of quick paintings from drawings of both the actual Alps and the rocks in my backyard. The simplified and essential configuration of the Annisquam rocks helped me express the Alpine peaks more effectively and have a more complete sense of the mountains, one that fits my way of moving and making shapes. The pictures convey interplay between macro and micro, distant and close, suggesting more possibilities for identifying morphological correspondence in both the physical world and imagination.

From 1997 to 2000 I experimented with digital painting in Photoshop using a “mouse”. The computer became a studio integrated into my life as a college provost. After a 22 year hiatus, I re-engaged the medium with the Brushes Redux app for the iPad in January 2022. Digital and physical media complement one another and they enrich the overall drawing and painting process.
